The Job
This one started with a gutter system that was past saving. We removed the existing compromised 5-inch gutters completely and replaced them with new oversized 6-inch K-style aluminum, a major upgrade in both performance and appearance.
The second half of the project was the porch overhead. We stripped out the existing soffit material, opened it back to the framing, and installed new hidden-vent soffit, finished with 1/2-inch J-channel all the way around for sharp, clean edges throughout the porch area.
Why 6-Inch Was the Right Call
The larger 6-inch system is built to handle a greater volume of water than traditional 5-inch gutters, which is exactly what you want when heavy rainfall hits a roof this size. More capacity means roof runoff gets collected and directed away from the home instead of sheeting over the edge.
That added capacity protects everything downstream of the roofline: the fascia, the soffit, the siding, the landscaping, and most importantly the foundation. Here's our full breakdown of when 6-inch makes sense.
Hidden-Vent Soffit: Airflow Without the Look
Soffit isn't just trim, it's how the roof assembly breathes. Attic ventilation pulls air in at the soffit and out at the top, and without it you get trapped heat in the summer and moisture problems in the winter. The catch with traditional vented panels is that the perforations are visible everywhere you look up.
Hidden-vent soffit solves both sides of that. The venting is built into the profile where you can't see it, so the porch ceiling reads as one smooth, clean surface while still moving the air the roof needs. You can see it in the photos: the finished look is seamless, and the ventilation is all still there, just discreet.
