It Started With a Gutter Cleaning
This is how a lot of our roof work begins. We were on the ladder for a routine gutter cleaning, and from up there the roof told a different story than it did from the driveway: shingles worn through, the ridge cap gone, and soft spots that meant water had been getting into the wood. We took photos, showed the homeowner exactly what we were looking at, and laid out the options. They chose a replacement, and we were back with the full crew.
Tear-off came first. We tarped the landscaping and the front of the house, stripped the old shingles down to the deck, and found what the soft spots had promised: rotted plywood that had to come out. You can see the fresh decking going in around the old in the photos, and the full tear-off in the first clip.
They cleaned the gutters thoroughly and cleaned up all the debris around my home after. They also had snapped a few pictures of roof damage from some surrounding trees and provided a sound recommendation with options to fix the roof issue.
The System Under the Shingles
A roof is a system, and the layers nobody sees are the ones doing most of the work. With the decking solid again, we rolled out GAF Deck-Armor synthetic underlayment across the whole roof and ran ice and water shield along the eaves and vulnerable areas, the spots where Jersey winters push meltwater back up under the shingles. The second clip is that underlayment being fastened down before a single shingle went on.
Then the shingles: GAF Timberline HDZ in Barkwood, a warm brown blend that sits right against the brick and the tree line on this property. The pallets on the lawn in the gallery are the whole roof, staged and ready. We put the same HDZ system on the cattle ranch down the road, and it is our go-to for a reason.
A New VELUX Skylight, Shade Included
The old skylight was not worth saving, so the roof got a brand-new VELUX unit flashed into the new system, with a remote-controlled shade. The last clip is the view from inside: a clean, bright skylight with a shade that closes at the push of a button. It is the kind of upgrade that makes the roof replacement feel like more than a repair.
